Allergies and Intolerances
Food allergies and intolerances are more common than most people think, and they’re not the same thing.
A food allergy is when your immune system thinks a certain food is dangerous, even if it’s harmless. This can trigger reactions like itching, swelling, rashes, vomiting, or trouble breathing. In severe cases, it can lead to anaphylaxis, which is life-threatening and needs immediate medical attention.
The top food allergens include:
Gluten (in wheat, barley, rye)
Dairy (especially cow’s milk proteins)
Eggs
Soya
Nuts (especially peanuts and tree nuts)
Shellfish and fish
Even tiny traces can cause a reaction, which is why cross-contamination is such a big deal. Always check for “may contain” or “processed in a facility with…” on food labels.
A food intolerance, on the other hand, doesn’t involve the immune system. It’s usually a digestive issue. Symptoms can include bloating, cramps, headaches, fatigue, or skin flare-ups, but they tend to show up slower and are not life-threatening.
Common intolerances include:
Lactose intolerance (can’t digest milk sugar)
Gluten sensitivity (not celiac, but still reactive)
Reactions to additives, preservatives, or natural food chemicals like histamine or salicylates
Managing allergies and intolerances starts with knowing your triggers, reading every label, and finding safe, nourishing alternatives. It can feel overwhelming at first, but once you get the hang of it, it becomes second nature.
